Whipped Body Butter Recipe (No Water, No Preservative)

A whipped body butter is only three to five ingredients with no water, which makes it one of the easiest first projects. The only real skill is how you cool it. Get the cooling right and you get a fluffy, cushiony butter. Get it wrong and you get grit. This recipe, Silky Whipped Body Butter, is written in percentages so it scales from a small jar to a big batch.
The formula (100 g, about 40 minutes)
| Phase | Ingredient | INCI | % | 100 g batch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Shea butter | Butyrospermum Parkii Butter | 42 | 42 g |
| A | Mango butter | Mangifera Indica Seed Butter | 20 | 20 g |
| A | Sweet almond oil | Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil | 30 | 30 g |
| B (cool-down) | Arrowroot powder | Maranta Arundinacea Root Powder | 6 | 6 g |
| B (cool-down) | Vitamin E | Tocopherol | 1 | 1 g |
| B (cool-down) | Lavender essential oil (optional) | Lavandula Angustifolia Oil | 1 | 1 g |
| Total | 100 | 100 g |
If you leave out the essential oil, make up the 1 % with extra almond oil so the batch still adds up to 100. The result is about 100 g (3.5 oz).
Method
- Sanitise a jar and your tools.
- Melt the shea, mango butter and almond oil together in a water bath at about 75 °C / 167 °F, until clear.
- Remove from the heat and let it cool for 10 minutes. Then put it in the fridge for 20 to 30 minutes, until the edges look solid but the centre is still soft.
- Stir in the arrowroot, vitamin E and optional essential oil.
- Whip with a hand mixer for 3 to 5 minutes, until fluffy with soft peaks.
- Spoon into the jar, close and label it. Let it set for a few hours.

Why the cooling step matters
Shea butter contains different fats that solidify at different temperatures. If it cools slowly on the counter, some of those fats form large crystals and the butter feels gritty. Melting it fully (and holding it hot for a few minutes) removes every crystal. Cooling it fast then keeps new crystals small. Whipping while it is partly set traps air and gives the frosting texture.
Quick fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Grainy or gritty | Butter cooled too slowly | Melt completely to 80 °C / 176 °F, hold 15 minutes, then cool fast in the fridge or freezer before whipping |
| Collapses or gets soft | Too much liquid oil or a warm room | Reduce the oil by 3 to 5 %, or add a little more butter, and chill again |
| Sweating or oily surface | Temperature swings | Store in a cool place and use a little more butter next time |
| Rancid, crayon-like smell | Oxidation of the oils | Use fresh oils, keep the 1 % vitamin E and store it dark and cool |
Swaps
- Replace the mango butter with cocoa butter for a firmer set. It is also more aromatic.
- Replace the almond oil with sunflower or jojoba oil. Sweet almond oil is a nut oil, so skip it if there is a nut allergy.
- Arrowroot gives the dry, silky after-feel. It is what gives the dry, silky finish.

Essential oil safety
Essential oils are optional. For body leave-on products like this one, the formulary's guideline is a total of 1 to 2 % essential oil, and the recipe uses 1 %. Avoid essential oils in products for babies and children, and when pregnant or nursing unless a qualified professional advises otherwise. Patch test on your inner forearm for 24 hours before regular use. See the essential oil dilution chart for the maximums by product type.
Storage and shelf life
Keep the jar closed, away from sun and heat. Use a clean spatula or dry hands. The planned shelf life is 6 to 9 months, in line with the 6 to 12 month range for water-free butters and balms. For more detail, see how long homemade skincare lasts.
