Candelilla Wax as a Beeswax Substitute: Ratios That Work

Candelilla wax is the usual plant-based replacement for beeswax, and the key rule is that you use less of it. It is a harder wax, so swapping 1:1 gives a balm that is too firm. The book's ingredient guide describes it as about two thirds the weight of beeswax. Below are the actual conversions used in four of the formulas, then how to test and tune a batch.
The ratio, in numbers
| Source in the book | Rule |
|---|---|
| Ingredient guide | Candelilla is about two thirds the weight of beeswax |
| Swap cheat sheet | Use 50 % of the beeswax amount, for a harder, glossier, vegan result |
| Plant-Based Candelilla Balm | 8 % candelilla in a balm built with plant butters and oils |

The two rules give you a range: start between about 50 % and 67 % of the beeswax percentage, then adjust by testing. Working at the lower end first is safer, because you can always melt it again and add more wax, while a too-hard balm needs more oil.
Worked conversions from the formulas
| Formula | Beeswax in the original | Candelilla swap | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft Body Balm | 18 % | 12 % candelilla, oil raised to 64 % | The oil takes up the difference |
| Solid Lotion Bar | 28 % | 19 % candelilla | Listed in the recipe's swaps |
| Nourishing Hand Salve | 15 % | 10 % candelilla | Listed in the recipe's swaps |
| Classic Beeswax Lip Balm | 25 % | About 12.5 to 17 % candelilla (50 to 67 %) | Adjust after a spoon test |
For the lip balm, the book lists candelilla as a plant-based swap at about two thirds of the beeswax weight, so that is the figure to start from. In every case, the percentages have to total 100, so move the removed amount into the oil.
A vegan balm built around candelilla
The Plant-Based Candelilla Balm is made entirely from plant ingredients:
| Ingredient | INCI | % |
|---|---|---|
| Candelilla wax | Euphorbia Cerifera Wax | 8 |
| Shea butter | Butyrospermum Parkii Butter | 25 |
| Mango butter | Mangifera Indica Seed Butter | 15 |
| Jojoba oil | Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil | 25 |
| Sunflower oil | Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil | 26 |
| Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) | Tocopherol | 1 |
| Total | 100 |
Method: sanitise tins. Melt the candelilla first at 80 °C / 176 °F, then add the butters and oils. Heat until fully clear, remove from the heat and stir in the vitamin E. Pour and let it set for 2 hours. Use 7 % candelilla for a softer balm. Planned shelf life is 9 to 12 months.
Test every swap on a cold spoon
- Melt the whole formula as usual.
- Dip a cold spoon into it and let it set for a minute.
- If the result is too hard, re-melt and add a little more oil. If it is too soft, add a little more candelilla.
- Adjust the wax by about 2 % at a time, and note what you changed.
This is the same check the book uses for all its balms. Change one thing per batch, so you know which change did what.
What else changes
- Texture. Candelilla gives a harder, glossier feel, so you may need a bit more oil than the weight conversion suggests.
- Scent and colour. Beeswax has a honey scent. Candelilla does not.
- Melting. The book melts candelilla first, at 80 °C / 176 °F, before adding butters and oils.
- Cooling. Pour into tins and give it time to set. Lip tubes should be filled slightly over the top, since the balm shrinks as it sets.
Other swaps in the same family
The cheat sheet lists several: carnauba wax at 25 to 30 % of the beeswax amount (very hard, brittle if overused), rice bran wax and sunflower wax at 70 % (harder, glossier), and soy wax at 1.5 times the amount (softer and creamier). Going the other way, beeswax replaces candelilla at 2 times the amount. Always test one at a time.
Safety and storage
These are water-free products, so they do not need a water-type preservative, and vitamin E slows rancidity of the oils. Patch test on your inner forearm for 24 hours before regular use, and stop if irritation appears. Keep scented balms out of the reach of children.
Put it to use
Try the swap in a lip balm first, since a small 50 g batch costs little to adjust. A whipped body butter does not use wax at all. For the full list of waxes and where candelilla sits among them, see the natural skincare ingredients guide.
What the book adds
The Natural Skincare Formulary includes the Plant-Based Candelilla Balm and the candelilla swap notes inside the Soft Body Balm, Solid Lotion Bar and Hand Salve formulas. The 46-ingredient guide lists candelilla at 3 to 15 % and the Ingredient Substitution Cheat Sheet bonus holds 150 swaps across butters, oils, waxes, emulsifiers and more.
